Data Visualisation Websites and Sharing Data

Jim sent me a message earlier today about a new data visualisation website that he had discovered: StatCrunch. When I took a look at this site, I encountered an appeal for people to upload and share their data, which struck a familiar chord. It seems that all of these web-based visualisation tools make a similar appeal. This certainly is true of Swivel, Data360 and Many Eyes. Thinking back to an earlier era, statistical package vendors always included some data with their software.

This year’s conference, Technology of Data: Collection, Communication, Access and Preservation, examines the role of technology and tools in various aspects of the data life cycle. The theme of this conference addresses how technology can affect aspects of data stewardship throughout the data lifecycle.

DISC-UK DataShare Project for Institutional Data Repositories

As part of the JISC-funded DISC-UK DataShare project{.moz-txt-link-freetext} in the UK, a State-of-the-Art Review has been written, marking out the current scene on data sharing at the beginning of the project. While the report is UK-focused, it may be of wider interest, and has a very thorough bibliography. DISC-UK is a UK consortium of data support professionals working in departments and academic libraries in universities (Data Information Specialists Committee-United Kingdom). The project is about DISC-UK members (all of whom are also IASSIST members) working with academics and institutional repository managers at the four partner institutions - London School of Economics and the Universities of Edinburgh, Oxford and Southampton - to provide exemplars for sharing research data within institutional repositories (based on EPrints.

Data analysis as performance art is the title of a posting on Jon Udell’s blog where he introduces a really nicely done screencast comparing local and national crime data using ManyEyes, the online visualization software hosted by IBM. It is official!

For those not familiar with the Web 2.0 numeric data utility Swivel - their mission “is to liberate the world’s data and make it useful so new insights can be discovered and shared”. However, it looks like Swivel are going official! Some NGOs are directly uploading their data into Swivel while in other cases Swivel are gathering data directly from ‘official’ Web sites such as OECD, ILO, UNESCO, WHO - see http://www.

Bad Data Examples Appeal

Back in early April, I canvassed the IASSIST list for examples of articles, studies, or any publication that misuses data. My original message: “Do you keep news stories that mis-state, misinterpret or otherwise misuse numeric data? I have a faculty member who would like to use such examples to demonstrate to her students the importance of numeracy in real life. The IASSIST Quarterly (IQ Vol. 30 issue 2 - 2006) is now available on the web: http://iassistdata.org/publications/iq/iqvol30.html Winter came late in Denmark, but suddenly the situation was normal: snow came and traffic stopped. And now 14 days after spring was here in March. I sat outside in the sun reading articles. Still it’s more difficult to write articles outside, we are waiting for the improvements of the computer screens. However, some people have stayed inside to write articles for the IASSIST Quarterly.
