Advancing Data Literacy for Law librarians in Uganda

Through its Membership Committee’s event sponsorship program, IASSIST sponsored a one-day consultative workshop on Data Literacy for Law Librarians. The workshop was held on 18th September 2025 at Makerere University. The workshop aimed at equipping law librarians and legal information professionals with the knowledge, skills, and practical competencies required to effectively understand, manage, analyze, and use data in support of legal research, access to justice, and evidence-based decision-making. Data Skills Training for Zimbabwean Academic Librarians

Data Skills Training Workshop for Zimbabwean Academic Librarians was held at Gwanda State University (GSU), Epoch Mine Campus, Filabusi, Zimbabwe from the 19th to the 20th of July 2023, with support from an IASSIST Program Sponsorship award. The event was hosted by the GSU Library. The training workshop targeted academic librarians in Zimbabwe with the main objective of increasing 1) their knowledge of research data management and 2) their capacity to assist researchers in this area.

The International Association of Social Science Information Service and Technology (IASSIST) sponsored a one-day Research Data Management workshop at Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST). The theme of the workshop was “Research Data Management for promotion of scholarship among academic staff”. A group photo with some of the participants at the workshop. Greetings IASSISTers! For most North American Universities and Colleges, we are in end-of-academic-year-phase - which finds us gearing up for the rush of summer conferences and workshops; it’s time to retool and/or share our expertise with the world! In Malaysia, March is one of 2 annual mid-semester breaks in which academic staff must attend to their non-teaching responsibilities – so this is when I spent a couple of weeks touring Malaysian Universities and giving general talks on Open Science to students, librarians, lecturers and researchers, and to some administrators as well.

Bobray Bordelon (left) and Zhaneille Green IASSIST supported the American Library Association (ALA) Spectrum Scholarship program in 2022-2023 as part of its commitment to attracting and retaining diverse candidates to the profession. “The Spectrum Scholarship Program actively recruits and provides scholarships to American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, Middle Eastern and North African, and/or Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander students to assist them with obtaining a graduate degree and leadership positions within the profession and ALA.

Data Literacy Mini-Conference

The Data Literacy Mini-Conference, generously sponsored by the Michigan Academic Library Association Instruction & Information Literacy Interest Group and IASSIST, took place Monday, October 24 at Michigan State University Libraries in East Lansing, Michigan. Forty attendees from a variety of small and large libraries enjoyed a keynote address about a hip-hop epistemology of knowledge in LIS. Next, attendees participated in a speed networking experience that randomly shuffled table groups until participants met just about everyone in the room.
