“Data are larger than the social sciences” and data concerns have grown beyond the traditional communities comprising IASSIST." –respondent to strategic plan survey (2009) As preparations intensify for IASSIST 2011, I encourage IASSIST members to review the 2010-2014 Strategic Plan with its focus on Advocacy, Community, and Professional Development. As IASSIST moves into the second year of the plan, the organization finds itself in an environment where data concerns have expanded to the point that many organizations have placed data curation, data sharing, and developing data literacy at the forefront of their agenda.

We have learned that there will be a very large conference in Vancouver at the same time as ours (5,000 people!), resulting in a real rush for hotel bookings. Regrettably rooms are no longer available at the Delta, Ramada, Days Inn and Victorian Hotels nearby (although you might check later for cancellations). Important! We encourage you to book as soon as possible, even before you have permission from your institution (you can always cancel if it turns out you can’t attend).

We encourage everyone planning to attend **IASSIST 2011 in Vancouver **to book hotel rooms as soon as possible. There are already room shortages due to other conferences that same week and a general pickup in tourism. The Delta Vancouver Suites reported today that there are only two rooms left at the special $199 rate; rooms are still available in the Premier category at a rate of $224.00 per night per room and in the Deluxe category rate of $239.

Past conference pages from 2000 to 2008 will be converted in the weeks to come. All presentations since 2000 have now been preserved in pdf format to ensure future access to the files. In the 11 February 2011 issue, Science joins with colleagues from Science Signaling, Science Translational Medicine, and Science Careers to provide a broad look at the issues surrounding the increasingly huge influx of research data. This collection of articles highlights both the challenges posed by the data deluge and the opportunities that can be realized if we can better organize and access the data. Science is making access to this entire collection FREE (simple registration is required for non-subscribers).

The IASSIST Quarterly (IQ) volume 33 number 3 is now on the web: [http://iassistdata.org/iq/issue/33/3] With this issue concentrating on quantitative investigations and the use of statistics, I came to think of the Mark Twain citation “There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.” With the violent title of the first article (see below), the article on numbers and statistics, and the report from a national statistics agency, the “Torture,Numbers, and Digital Tape” title surfaced.
