Nancy McGovern Named SAA Fellow

IASSIST member Nancy McGovern was recently inducted as a Fellow by the Society of American Archivists at its August meeting in Austin, Texas. SAA Fellow is an honor that recognizes outstanding contributions to the archival profession. Nancy has been Digital Preservation Officer (DPO) at ICPSRsince 2006 and brought a substantial record of accomplishment to her current position. She served as DPO and director of the Research and Assessment Services Department at Cornell University; Electronic Records Manager at Audata, Ltd.

Open Data Fellowships at University of Michigan

Students with research interests in scientific data management, sharing and reuse have a unique opportunity to participate in the Open Data fellowship program. Open Data is an Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) sponsored by NSF. Open Data fellows engage in a vibrant set of research activities at the University of Michigan in the conduct of responsible data-intensive science and engineering involving faculty and doctoral students from SI, Computer Science and Engineering, Bioinformatics, Materials Science, and Chemical Engineering.

Conference webcasts and presentations online!

A week has passed since IASSIST 2009. I hope most of you have made it safely back home by now - and are ready to refresh the memories by watching the conference webcasts and viewing presentations. Webcasts of all three plenaries and Thursday and Friday’s concurrent sessions in the Small Auditorium are now available. We didn’t have cameras available during the Wednesday sessions, so no videos of these presentations, sorry! But most of the presentations are already online - a few are still missing either because we didn’t have them or we are waiting for an updated version.

ICPSR Summer Program course on DDI

As you may have heard during last week’s wonderful IASSIST meeting in Tampere, there are still spaces available in the ICPSR Summer Program course on DDI, to be held at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, on July 13-16. The course is titled “Documenting Data Using DDI 3.0: Supporting Research, Collection Management, and Access,” and instructors are Wendy Thomas (Minnesota Population Center, University of Minnesota) and Arofan Gregory (Open Data Foundation).

There will be no printed version mailed out to the membership. This double issue is the work of the authors and their articles are introduced below. We are presenting an integrated double issue of high quality. We should also give a special thanks to the editors of the issue.

The IASSIST Quarterly (IQ Vol. 31 issue 2 - 2007) is now available on the web: http://iassistdata.org/publications/iq/iqvol31.html This issue will be printed and mailed to the membership. From next issue IASSIST will be saving trees and only publish the IQ on the web. We hope you agree with our decision. Thanks. Some of you are now getting ready for the IASSIST conference in Tampere, Finland 26.-29. of May. Remember if you are giving presentations that you could write the presentation as an article for the IQ.

Symposium on Institutional Data Services at Edinburgh

The Edinburgh University Data Library celebrated 25 years of support for staff and students in their discovery, access, use and management of research datasets. On 5 December 2008, following on from the Digital Curation Centre international conference held in Edinburgh that week, friends and colleagues from near and far gathered in the afternoon at the EDINA offices to celebrate the milestone with short speeches and cutting the cake, along with food, drink and toasts.

And another conference has passed. It’s so sad to think that it will be another year before we get together again but at least we can play virtually on our lists, this blog and maybe even in SecondLife! I’m still trying to round up more conference reports but in the meantime, here’s the official conference song lyrics. So I had the best intentions to blog the conference but alas I was distracted - creating my SecondLife avatar to be able to participate virtually as well as in reality was far more interesting than I want to admit! My teenagers were appalled when they found out I was on Facebook - what will they say when I tell them about SusieQue! As a technology-oriented association hosting a technology-themed conference, it is maybe not surprising that we should experiment a bit.
