Health Sciences Data Steward
The Research Data Management Core (RDMC) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) is accepting applications for a Health Sciences Data Steward position. RDMC is a new campus unit that was established by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research in response to new and forthcoming data policies issued by major federal funding agencies, and to create opportunities to harness UNC’s data assets for AI and other emergent research techniques. RDMC has been charged with building a campus-wide data ecosystem of expertise, services, and technology to support and promote data management and sharing standards and best practices throughout the research lifecycle.
The Health Sciences Data Steward will be instrumental in setting the campus agenda for data management and sharing through strategic planning, policy development, needs assessment, and service deployment.
This is an exciting opportunity for a mid-career professional who is eager to make a significant impact on a major university’s response to current and forthcoming data management and sharing mandates, as well as its preparations for enabling next-generation research to maximize the value of data produced at UNC.
This is a repost of the position, which has been updated to target talented information professionals who have applied knowledge in health sciences research data management, curation, and archiving principles and techniques, with experience serving in roles that address the critical issues and challenges of managing and sharing clinical and health-related data (e.g., informed consent and human participant confidentiality, good clinical practice, large-scale genomic and core facility-generated data, metadata standardization) specifically. Ideal candidates are also keenly aware of trends in policy, technology, and research methods that impact data management and sharing practices and expectations in health sciences and related disciplines.
The annual salary range for this permanent, full-time position is $110,000 to $130,000.

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:
The Research Data Management Core (RDMC) is a campus unit that was established by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research (OVCR) in response to scientific data management and sharing policies issued by federal funding agencies and other critical stakeholders in the scientific enterprise at UNC. These policies demand development and implementation of a campus-wide research data management strategy that supports compliance with those policies.
Authorized and financially supported by the OVCR, the RDMC has been charged with providing overall direction and oversight of operations and activities that prioritize research data management and sharing leadership, support, and innovation. The Director of the Research Data Management Core provides reporting of operations, finances, and program outcomes to the OVCR for program evaluation and unit accountability.
Position Summary:
The Health Sciences Data Steward is a position in the Research Data Management Core (RDMC) unit that supports lifecycle research data management and sharing activities in areas of the UNC campus engaged in health sciences research. Reporting to the Assistant Director for Research Data Stewardship, this position develops and deploys resources, services, and training to sustain a unified, campus-wide ecosystem of research data management and sharing infrastructure that supports compliance with funding agency policies and promotes the goals of those policies.
The Health Sciences Data Steward is a mid-career professional who has demonstrated knowledge in research data management, curation, and archiving, with additional specialized experience addressing the critical issues and challenges of managing and sharing health-related data (e.g., informed consent and human participant confidentiality, good clinical practice (GCP) for clinical trials, large-scale genomic and core facility-generated data management, NIH data management and sharing policy). They have expertise in health sciences research methods and prevailing data management standards and best practices (e.g., FAIR, CARE, TRUST principles) to assist researchers with the development and implementation of data management and sharing plans (DMSPs). They also have a keen understanding of current and emerging trends in scientific publication, funding agency and institutional policies, and innovations in information technologies, and how these trends impact research data management and sharing requirements and preferences of research communities.
The primary purpose of the Health Sciences Data Steward position is to:
- Develop and implement data management and sharing strategies in collaboration with health sciences researchers, campus data support units, and other relevant campus stakeholders;
- Lead programs and initiatives that bring together various individuals and data support units on campus to identify and address current and emerging data management and sharing needs of health sciences researchers;
- Deploy training programs for faculty, staff, and students that support data management and sharing policy compliance and promote adoption of data management and sharing best practices;
- Contribute to research and development activities that improve and enhance data management and sharing workflows and systems used by health sciences researchers;
- Supervise and mentor graduate students participating in research assistantship programs designed to complement graduate training in research data preservation, management, and archiving; and
- Make contributions to the data archives profession to help advance the practice of data management and sharing in health sciences research contexts.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and licensure.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:
Required Minimum Training:
- Experience planning and executing data curation tasks in accordance with prevailing archival standards and best practices, with consideration to laws/regulations governing the handling and management of animal and human subjects research data, electronic health records, and other clinical/health-related research artifacts.
- In-depth applied knowledge of the data management and sharing policy landscape including U.S. federal grant-funding agency policies, journal-based data availability policies, and/or other policies requiring data management and sharing plans and activities.
- Program/project management experience in a research support organization responsible for deploying research data management and archiving support technology and services.
- Familiarity with various data types, file formats, metadata standards, and established data repositories associated with clinical and health sciences research.
- Ability to effectively communicate with audiences of various backgrounds and professional levels including university administrators, faculty researchers, students, and other research stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:
- ALA-accredited master’s degree in information or library science with coursework in research data management and archiving, or related advanced degree.
- Additional education or work experience in a health sciences-related field.
- Experience developing and delivering research data management and curation training to learners of varying abilities and diverse backgrounds.
- History of contributions to greater professional and scholarly communities through active participation in professional conferences and meetings, publications, funded projects, and/or other scholarly outputs.
