Hiring range: Associate Librarian Salary Range: $ 77,787 to $93, 725 annually (salary commensurate with experience and qualifications) This is a full-time appointment.
The University of California, Berkeley Library seeks a dynamic, collaborative, and user- oriented colleague as the Data Services Librarian. This position will help develop, lead, and coordinate a robust suite of data services that serve to bolster student and faculty research through the discovery, curation, management, analysis, preservation and visualization of data to meet curricular and research needs on campus. Responsibilities
Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Digital Initiatives and Information Technology, this position will coordinate, implement, assess, provide outreach for, and enhance the Library’s data services program. The Library’s data services program partners with UC Berkeley faculty, researchers, and students to support the discovery, acquisition, organization, management, and curation of data. It provides a range of services such as advising researchers on the creation of data management plans, helping researchers find data, data publishing, and data-related consultations and workshops. The Data Services Librarian will work across the libraries to advance and deliver data services that support faculty and students engaged in data-intensive research projects. Internally, the Data Services Librarian will collaborate in leading and providing guidance for enhancing data skills among library staff. In collaboration with other librarians, the position will also provide guidance and partnership to students through data programs and other library initiatives in the Center for Connected Learning (CCL). This position will actively collaborate with library colleagues to promote and integrate data services and data literacy into library instruction across multiple disciplines.
This position will collaborate with subject/liaison librarians and colleagues in Library Acquisitions and Catalog & Metadata Services to develop and implement strategies to support the acquisition, licensing, management, discovery, and archiving of research datasets. The position will collaborate with colleagues in Library IT to make library- purchased data accessible and discoverable to users by developing or using existing open platforms and services.
The Data Services Librarian also serves as a lead contact about library data services, resources, and policies to the UC System and Berkeley campus partners such as the Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society; D-Lab; Research Data Management (RDM); and California Digital Library’s (CDL) data services. In addition, this position works closely with the RDM Service Lead position and contributes to the RDM operations group.
The candidate will work in a team environment that includes library staff from different departments and divisions across the Library and other campus units and must be willing to engage in continual learning, development, and application of additional expertise through work-related experiences and professional development opportunities. The candidate must also possess the ability to adapt to change, ambiguity, and complex problems that are typical of an academic setting. This position may also supervise students.
Qualifications:
Minimum basic qualification required by application date
- Advanced degree.
Additional required qualifications by start date in position:
- At least two years of experience working in libraries.
- At least one year of experience with data tools and technologies in a higher education organization.
Additional preferred qualifications:
- Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent international degree.
- Demonstrated knowledge of data management, data curation, and data preservation principles and practices.
- Experience or demonstrated potential supporting researchers with data services, including discovery, management, visualization, reuse, security, and storage.
- Demonstrated ability to plan, coordinate, collaborate on, and assess effective programs, projects, and services.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Demonstrated analytical, organizational, problem solving, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Demonstrated initiative, flexibility, creativity, and ability to work effectively both independently without direct supervision and as a team member.
