Job Summary
The Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR), the world’s largest archive of digital social science data, is now accepting applications for up to two Data Project Managers to oversee the management of data acquisition, archiving, and related projects. ICPSR makes thousands of curated datasets available for access, download, and analysis; provides training on using the datasets; and works with funding agencies and data producers to ensure that data of value are preserved and made available.

In this role you may manage any of a variety of projects, including projects that focus on expanding access to health care data from several social science disciplines, disseminating education and childcare data, and serving the restricted data needs of the social science community. This also may involve expanding access to government data and data related to journal publications.
You will report to Dharma Akmon, Director of Project Management and User Support.
Responsibilities*
You will have primary managerial responsibility for all aspects of data acquisition, sharing, user support and outreach, and reporting. This will include reaching out to potential data depositors, supporting data producers as they deposit data with us, prioritizing data curation work and monitoring its progress, supporting users as they work with data, and creating and facilitating data trainings to maximize data’s value to researchers. The major responsibilities include:
40% Project Administration
- Provide administrative and managerial guidance of project activities
- Ensure that sponsor deliverables are met on-time and on-budget, and communicate with funding organizations on activities of sponsored projects
- Collaborate with project Principal Investigator on short and long-range planning, including creating budgets for ongoing and new/proposed projects
- Monitor project spending
35% Data Acquisitions and Management of Confidential Data
- Review incoming data deposits, and ensure curation work is carried out according to project’s priorities. Assist data producers in the successful deposit of their data
- Collect and manage information about potential and existing data depositors, and reach out to potential and existing data depositors
- Implement and ensure adherence with policies and guidelines for handling confidential data
25% User Support and Outreach
- Provide technical assistance to data users
- Develop promotional materials, coordinate conference arrangements, and present on ICPSR products and archives at conferences and through webinars
- Ensure archival holdings are relevant to data users and that the research community is aware of products and services available from ICPSR and/or the project
- Engage with Web team and IT to define, develop, test, and maintain tools, systems, and websites
Required Qualifications*
- Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, information science, or related field
- 2 years or more of project or research management experience, with demonstrated ability create project plans and track goals, write statements of work, prepare progress reports for all partners, communicate with funding agencies and partners, and monitor spending
- Knowledge of current issues and developments related to data management, archiving, and preservation as determined through work experiences, education, cover letter and interview questions.
- Experience working with social science data, concepts, analysis methods, and statistical applications (SAS, SPSS, etc.)
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
- Strong organization skills, attention to detail and accuracy
- The ability to work as part of a team or individually while meeting deadlines in a multitasking environment
- The ability to travel 10%
Desired Qualifications*
- Master’s degree in social sciences, information science, or related field
- Knowledge of confidentiality, disclosure, and related issues regarding the distribution of social science data
- Experience in a research setting including a data archive or academic library
- Experience working with developers to define system and tool requirements
Underfill Statement
This position may be filled at the Associate level or Intermediate level depending on qualifications. The salary will be determined based on classification and experience.
