Our Data Services Librarian provides individual and small-group consultations, workshops, instruction in information and resource use, has a strong commitment to student learning and success, and collaborates closely with our team of subject librarians serving a variety of GSU colleges and programs. Reporting to the Team Leader of Research Data Services, this position is part of a growing team of data librarians at our downtown Atlanta campus providing expertise and support in areas in the areas of data analysis tools & methods, mapping & data visualization, finding data & statistics, survey design, and data management. We welcome a new type of information professional who works with students at all levels in learning the information tools and skills needed to succeed in college and career, and who is a partner in faculty research. This position focuses primarily on assisting the university community with finding, evaluating, and using quantitative data involving statistical analysis software. While we do not expect that our Data Services Librarian be an expert in statistics or statistical computing, we are seeking a self-motivated individual ready to dive-in and learn new skills and tools, including but not limited to R, RStudio, SAS, SPSS, and STATA.
The position will serve as library liaison to one or more academic departments, based on need and the individual’s educational background.
On-site training opportunities and funding for travel and professional development will be provided. The position serves as a member of the library faculty (12-month, non-tenure track), holds faculty rank, and is expected to participate in service and scholarly activities as outlined in the University Library’s faculty guidelines.
Required qualifications
- Master’s degree or higher in a relevant field
- Strong ability to work effectively with culturally diverse library users and colleagues
- Excellent technical skills and ability and self-motivation to learn new ones
- Familiarity with the methods and tools commonly used in quantitative research in any discipline
- Background or experience that indicates an ability to become proficient in two or more of the following: R, SAS, SPSS, or STATA
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills
- Understanding of the rapidly changing role of the academic library and librarian in higher education
Preferred qualifications
- Experience working in an academic or research library
- Experience with R, SAS, SPSS, or STATA
- Experience providing instruction
