IASSIST 2026 - Championing Data: Data Professionals at the Nexus

“Fireside Chat” On Data-Related Careers

The role of a “data person” has evolved considerably over time–even the name has changed, from “researcher” or “statistician” to “data scientist.” While statistical training remains important, it may no longer be sufficient. Today’s data careers require many skills - including those of a data detective, archaeologist, storyteller, graphic designer, and privacy expert. Communications and advocacy skills are also increasingly relevant to data-oriented careers. Knowing what measures are needed, with what level of granularity and accuracy, is critical. This requires discussion with the data users that include practitioners, policymakers, administrators, and journalists. In this discussion, we’ll bring together people who are–and who hire–data experts to share their thoughts on the types of skills needed and how they see the field evolving.
