Introducing The "Data Advocacy For All" Toolkit: Curated Resources To Support Critical Data Education For Social Change
This presentation introduces the "Data Advocacy for All Toolkit", a curated collection of open online resources designed to help students and organizations use data-based arguments and narratives in advocacy campaigns that promote a more just and equitable world. The interdisciplinary toolkit bridges humanities and data science education by emphasizing how ethically-informed data practice can draw on humanistic perspectives (such as the study of rhetoric) to inform persuasive and compelling narratives that underpin effective campaigns for social change. We describe how the toolkit was developed through an interdisciplinary grant-funded collaboration among humanities and social science scholars, and highlight its iterative design process and novel approach to the creation of open educational resources. The presentation also provides practical guidance on navigating and using the published toolkit, along with examples of how it has already been employed to foster critical data literacy in the undergraduate curriculum. Finally, we discuss opportunities for data professionals, librarians, and educators to use the toolkit in future work that involves instruction and outreach on topics related to critical data literacy and data-based advocacy.
