Teaching Qualitative Data Analysis In The Age of Ai

Generative AI tools are increasingly designed for and marketed to social researchers, including qualitative researchers. In Data Services consultations, patrons wonder how they can use generative AI ethically, responsibly, and with methodological rigor. This project explores how the teaching of qualitative research is evolving in the age of generative AI (GenAI). Through semi-structured interviews with educators (professors, data librarians, and technology trainers) I explore how teachers are redesigning courses and consultations to account for GenAI tools. In this conference paper, I share preliminary findings from pilot interviews in New York City and Berlin. I also speculate about how data librarians might collaborate with faculty to better support and scaffold emerging researchers as they grapple with GenAI tools.
