Championing Data Training Through Micro-Credentials: Project-Based R Short Courses

In response to declining workshop attendance in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, we developed a series of short, intensive R programming courses designed to re-engage learners through focused, project-based instruction. These 2–3 day in-person workshops equip participants with practical data skills using R, centered around real-world research problems and culminating in tangible outcomes. To further incentivize participation and recognize achievement, we introduced micro-credential badges that learners can showcase on digital platforms. This presentation will explore the pedagogical design, implementation, and outcomes of these workshops, highlighting how they foster data training, build confidence in using open-source tools, and support learner motivation through credentialing. We will also discuss lessons learned in adapting to other formats, strategies for sustaining engagement, and how this model can be scaled or adapted by other institutions seeking to champion data education in a flexible, accessible way.
