From risk to rescue: Securing data for the future generations

IASSIST members work to discover, curate, make available, and keep data available. At the beginning of February, IASSIST Secretary Lynda Kellam started an internal Google document for her university to keep track of USA federal data that was disappearing and data rescue efforts. While many were concerned and downloading data individually, efforts were often being duplicated while other data was disappearing and at risk of being lost. IASSIST members were inquiring as were members of sister organizations including RDAP and the Data Curation Network.

Time to Finally Leave X Behind

IASSIST adopted Twitter at quite an early stage, already in 2010. For many years, Twitter was a key online communication tool during annual conferences. For several years, the closing session of the conference even highlighted the top ten or so tweets. In addition to funny updates, Twitter served as an information channel and, during the sessions, as a venue to share key observations. The participants summarised key contents, shared insightful observations in 140 characters and photos.

We are excited to share news of several developments that we have been working on over the last few months: The IASSIST Qualitative Social Science and Humanities Data Interest Group (QSSHDIG) is planning an IASSIST Quarterly special issue dedicated to the complexities of sharing qualitative data. For this special issue, we invite submissions of abstract proposals focused on the ethical challenges, methodological concerns, and labor involved in making qualitative data and research materials publicly available.
